FORM, GM, GAS, 41

The purpose of the form is to maintain the shape of the Dog Gas Mask 41 during sto-rage.

Manufacturers' markings and the size number, 1, 2, or 3, are stamped into the metal on the nose plate.

The facepiece form consists of a nose plate, tension strap, shaper, and spring cable. The form are made in three sizes: 1, 2, and 3.

The nose plate is constructed of galvanized sheet iron and has a shape identical to that to the valve assenbly housing of the facepiece. The plate has a lower opening which coincides with the opening in the valve assenbly housing. Two nibs, bent up from the plate, are 2.1 cm apart and have openings which receive the cotter pin that fastens the nose plate to the tension strap. When the face-piece form is in position, the nose plate rests against the inside of the valve assembly housing, the lower opening slipping the flutter valve screen.

The tension strap is constructed of spring sheet steel, and is 0.75 inches wide and 10.3 inches long, both ends being rolled. The cotter pins of the nose plate and shaper pass through the rolled ends of the tension strap. When in place, the tension strap is slightly bent, thus keeping the other components of the face-piece form firmly pressed in position.

The shaper is a piece of galvanized sheet iron, stamped somewhat in the shape of a "T" and ribbed for strength. The back section of the shaper has a rolled end which clamps the spring cable in position. The front section has a 0.2 inch lip along the sides. A cotter pin passes through the lips on both sides and fastens the shaper to the tension strap. When in position, the back section of the shaper is on the inside of the rubber flap of the facepiece. The front section rests along the inside of the facepiece between the two eyepiece.

The spring cable forms a 7.3 inch diameter circle and its ends are clamped in the rol-led end of the shaper. It is constructed of coiled spring steel wire and has a diameter of 0.3 inches. When in position, the cable rests on the inside of the rubber flap of the face-piece.
