MASK, GAS, HORSE, 41

Pferdemaske 41

PURPOSE:

The mask is used to protect horses for short periods of time against quick or surprise gas attacks.

MARKINGS:

There are no markings of identification value except for the letters "R" and "L" on the nostril inserts.

DESCRIPTION:

The Horse Mask 41 is issued in one universal size, and consists of two nostril inserts, which completely fill the horse's nostrils, with valves, scraw-on canisters, connecting straps and supporting straps.

The nostril insert (A) is a hollow bakelite cone with a circular connecting neck about half way along one side which contains the rubber disk type inlet valve and also has a thread into which is screwed the drum type canister. An oval opening on the other side and nearer the apex of the cone is the opening through which the filtered air reaches the nostrils. The bottom of the cone is threaded to receive the base ring (C) which carries the outlet valve (B). The valve is protected by a perforated plate held in place on the base ring with a spring ring. The base ring is prevented from unscrewing by another spring ring on the bottom of the cone. The base ring is arranged with a series of open-ings so that when the base ring is screwed down air passes through there openings, by-passing the canister. When the base ring is screwed up, the openings are closed and the air is drawn through the canister. Air is exhaled through the outlet valve.

The nostril inserts are marked "R" (right) and "L" (left) and should be placed in the corresponding nostrils. Several lugs and cross-pieces are provided upon which the con-necting straps are fixed. These fittings include a nose strap with buckle, a gum strap of webbing with a flat hook fastener, the right and left cheek springs, and the safety straps with wooden toggles and buckles on the check springs. The adjustable nose strap con-nects the nostril inserts. The gum strap is fixed to the right nostril insert and a flat hook fastener is hooked into the free lug of the left nostril insert. The check springs, which are spiral and covered with cloth, ensure the level and firm positioning of the inserts in the nostrils. Spring clips on the cheek springs fasten the whole respirator to the support-ing web strap which serves to hold the respirator on the horse's head.
