PURPOSE:

The purpose of this kit is to enable civilian detection of contaminated materials by means of an easily portable kit.

MARKINGS:

The inside of the cover is marked as indicated in the drawing. The markings on the containers in the compartments are as follows: (A) Lösung 4 Kaliumwismutjodid, Natrium-bisulfit zum Aufhellen der Lösung 4, Aktivkohle; (B) Lösung 1 Unterphosphorige Säure; (C) Lösung 2 Goldchloridlösung; (D) Lösung 3 Dimethylanilin; (E) Gebrauchte Lösung aus Gläschen 2 (Goldchloridlösung). The package of cot-ton in the rear bottom compartment is marked: "Extra prima Watte".

DESCRIPTION:

The kit is made of wood, varnished of the outside and measures 17.2 x 11.5 x 11.8 in-ches; the four legs raise the kit 1.6 inches. There are two sturdy metal carrying handles on the left and right sides of the kit and one on the cover. The cover is hinged at the rear, and at the front side, at the bottom. The front side has a sliding catch on the right side so that it can be opened and held in a horizontal position. The rack holding the so-lution bottles can be removed to uncover the spare equipment stored in the rear bottom section of the kit. The flask and bubbling tubes are fastened to the back of the front compartment by brass clamps and the alcohol lamp fits into a brass fitting fixed to the bottom of the kit under the brass ring that supports the water bath. The apparatus, as set up in the drawing, consists of the following: 1 alcohol lamp, 1 water bath, 1 flask, 1 two hole rubber stopper, 1 calcium chloride tube with charcoal filling, 3 bubble tubes, and 1 rubber aspirator bulb. The contents of the rack is: 1 flask of activated charcoal, 1 tube of sodium bisulfite, 1 bottle of hypophosphorous acid, 1 bottle of glod chloride soultion, 1 bottle of dimethyl aniline, 1 bottle for used gold chloride solution. The spare equipment consists of 1 flask with a rubber stopper and bent tube to fit 4 bubbler tubes with rubber stoppers and bent tubes to fit, 0.5 meters of 3 mm rubber tubing, 1 pair of tongs, and 1 roll of cotton.

The apparatus is essantially an air flow apparatus, the contaminated material being heated in the flask and the test solutions being put in bubblers with the corresponding numbers. Turbidity in tube #1 indicates arsenicals; turbidity in tube #2 indicates mustard and other vesicants; a yellow to orange coloration in tube #3 indicates PS, CG and lacri-mators; a cherry-red color in a bubble tube containing decolorized "Lösung 4" indicates nitrogen mustard.
