KIT, DETECTION AND SAMPLING, GAS

This kit is used to detect contamination by chemical agents, to collect samples for chemical analysis, to post gas warning cards over the contaminated area, and to obtain intelligence data.

There are no markings of identification value.

The kit consists of an aluminum chest, with leather carrying straps attached to the back side, a metal carrying handle on the top, and a clamp fastener for the lid. The di-mensions of the case are 5.75 x 14 x 17.75 inches.

The case is constructed of 14 gauge sheet aluminum and is parttioned into 7 com-partments, each having spring clips to hold the contents in place; the partitions and clips are also made of sheet aluminum. The case opens from the front by means of 2 hinged doors. Four aluminum racks are found on the inside of the doors, containing a list of kit contents, and instruction and data cards; the lower left-hand rack also has a pencil clip. Six sample bottles are found in the upper and central compartments, each being held in place by both a semicircular clip and a leaf spring clip. Each bottle measures 5.9 inches in height and 2.75 inches in diameter and is fitted with a ground glass stopper. The lower right and left-hand compartments hold aluminum spoons and spatulas.

The right and left central compartments each hold an aluminum container held in place by a spring clip. These containers hold Sudan Red indicator paper, which is dispensed through a slot in the upper front side of the container. A helical spring riveted to the bottom, and to a movable follower plate keeps the paper pressed against the removal slot at the top.

The bottom central compartment contains 4 aluminum cans 3.6 inches in height and 1.2 inches in diameter. Each can has a perforated shaker cap and is closed by another slip-on cap. These cans contain the pink or ochre detector powder, item IV–C–6.
