Gasjäckchen

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this jacket is to give respiratory and facail protection against contami-nated atmosphere to chirldren about four years old; the child may be walk or be carried by the accomanying adult. It is used in conjunction with a bellows and a VM canister.

MARKINGS:

The jacket is marked as follows just below the eyepiece: "Gasjäckchen - RL 1 39/49, Vertrieb gemäß § 8 Luftschutzgesetz genehmigt".

DESCRIPTION:

The jacket consists of a viscose material lined on the inside with white rubber; the stitching seams are lined on the inside with white rubber cement or tape. The length of the jacket down the front from the top of the outlet valve to the bottom is 21 inches. The sleeves and waist have drawn tapes to tighten the garment about the child's body. On the inside of the fron there is a little cover sewed on to cover the inlet valve where the VM canis-ter is attached.

The eyepiece consists of a elliptical convex celluloid window, 4.75 x 6.25 inches and cemented in the upper front of the jacket. The outlet valve is fitted into a 0.75 inch opening in the front of the jacket, 0.75 inches down from the topmost seam. The exter-nal guard case screws on the threaded part which fits into the opening from the inside and makes a tight fit against the jacket fabric. The guard case contains the outlet valve which is of the thin glass plate und coil spring type. The inlet valve consists of a rubber-zied fabric disc, 0.8 inches in diameter; the inside of the inlet assembly is made of black plastic and has an internal thread and rubber washer to receive the VM canister. The outside of the assembly consists of a black plastic elbow which is secured to the jacket by a metal band.

A three foot hose connects the above black elbow to the bellows; the hose is made paper reinforced with two coiled wires and covered on the out-side with braided fabric. The connections are made by short pieces of rubber tubing.

The bellows consists of two pieces of wood connected by rubberized fabric, the latter acting as the hinge at the vertex of the "V"; the outlet connection and the inlet valve are on the same side. The bellows is equipped with a carrying strap so that it can be operated while the carrier is walking, by pressing the handle, thereby closing the bellows against the carrier's side. The metal outlet on the bellows has a heel rest so that it can be operated by foot; the carrying strap can be adjusted to the hold foot in place on the bellwos. The accompanying adult usually operated the bellows.
