The purpose of this apparatus is to test for leaks in facepieces, connecting hoses and valves of gas masks.

The door on the side of the container is marked: "Prüfgerät für Gm".

The container is a green painted sheet metal case with the front side hinged at the bottom and fastened shut by two hooks at the top of both sides: the case measures 13.8 x 14.5 x 20.7 inches. The two ends of the case are fitted with metal loop carrying handles. The essential parts of the apparatus are as follows:

1. A pump powered by an electric motor

2. An ammonia saturating flask

3. A chromium plated dummy testing head

4. A water manometer

5. Rubber tubing for marking necessary pressure and

suction line connections.

The gas mask is fitted on the dummy head and a stream of air and ammonia vapor is forced through the mask by means of the pump. Any escaping ammonia is detected by a cloth soaked with phenolpthalein solution and draped over the facepiece, the cloth turn-ing pink in the presence of ammonia. Leaks in the connecting tubes and outlet valves are detected by observing changes in the readings of the manometer.
