The purpose of the carrier is to provide an individual carrying container for the as-sembled Gas Mask 38 or 38, and accessory equipment.

Some of the carriers may have the letter "D" stamped in the base, which indicates a carrier that may be made waterproof by the addition of a rubber gasket in the cover. No markings of significance for identifying the carrier are present.

The carrier is a green painted, ribbed, sheet metal cylinder, measuring 11.2 inches in height and 5 inches in diameter. The cover, which is attached to the carrier by a loose metal loop, is one inch deep and has a compartment for anti-dim discs on the inner side. The eyepiece cleaning cloth is held in the bottom of the carrier by a spring wire loop. The container has a lacquered aluminum liner which reaches to within 1.8 inches of the top. On the out-side of the carrier is a spring catch with a web strap for locking the co-ver. There are three metal loops soldered on the sides for connecting the carrying strap.
