CANISTER, CARBON MONOXIDE, S-Nr. 86 (CIV)

PURPOSE:

This canister is designed to provide civilians with respiratory protection against carbon monoxide, war gases, acid gases and vapora, and duste. It is used in connection with a hose and facepiece.

MARKINGS:

The blue label near the top of the canister has the following markings: S-CO-Filter Nr. 86 Schützt gegen Kohlenoxyd außerdem gegen alle chemischen Kampfstoffe sowie gegen saure Gase und Dämpfe und gegen Schwebstoffe". Two inches below the blue label is a larger white label marked: "Auer-CO-Filter Nr."

DESCRIPTION:

This canister is very similar to item III–B–13, Canister, Carbon Monoxide, COFB 38. in both contens and construction. The overall dimensions and appearance of the canisters are the same with the exception that the civilian carrier is made of leather while the army COFB 38 carrier is made of web straps. This civilian canister has the the blue label which explians the other posaible uses for the canister besides defence against carbon monoxide; the COFB 38 model has no such label. Both models are designed for 40 hours service.

The canister has eight chemical layers consisting of: (1) calcium chloride, (2) calcium carbide, (3) hopcalite, (4) calcium chloride, (5) hopcalite, (6) calcium chloride, (7) calci-um chloride, and (8) charcoal; (1) is at the top of the canister.
