PURPOSE: |
The purpose of this canister is to provide protection against carbon monoxide for a maximum period of 1 1/2 hours. It is designed for assembly with the standard German facepiece. |
MARKINGS: |
Printed in black on the top of the canister is the following: COFE 39. In addition, nu-merous goverment and manufacturers' markings are present. |
DESCRIPTION: |
The canister, constructed of sheet iron 0.016 inch thick, is painted a greenish-gray. It is sealed at the top by a hexagonal metal screw cap with a rubber washer, and at the bottom by a metal cap. It measures 4.5 inches in height and 4.2 inches in diameter. |
A cross-section view of the canister shows three layers of chemicals and a mechani-cal filter: hopcalite, calcium chloride, charcoal, and asbestos bearing paper, listed in or-der from the top of the canister down. |
1. The hopcalite layer consists of jet-black, sharp-edged particles and occupies a volume about 1 inch thick. |
2. The calcium chloride layer, 0.9 inch thick, consists of grayish-white granules. |
3. The charcoal layer, 0.3 inch thick, consists of short, grayish-black rods. |
4. The paper layer consists of concentric pleats 0.6 inch thick. |
