CANISTER, GM, FE 37
Filtereinsatz 37

FE 37

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this canister is to remove chemical warfare agents from the atmos-phere, when used in conjunction with a facepiece.

MARKINGS:

This class of canisters includes all those marked "FE 37" with the exception of those having the additional marking "Tp" or "Tropen" which are discussed under item III–B–5. The "FE 37" group of canisters have numerous additional markings, some of which are go-vernment and manufacturers' markings, and other which pertain to the construction and the filling.

DESCRIPTION:

The canisters are green or gray lacquered and of snout-type, measuring 4.2 inches in diameter and 3.4 inches hight. Canisters marked "Fe" are of tin-plate construction, while those without this markings are manufactured of aluminum alloy. The canister body is fabricated from two sections of metal; the upper section consists of the externally threaded neck and all of the sides of the canister down to the base, and the second section consists of the base and about 0.8 inches of the sides which overlap that portion of the first section that reaches to the base. The edges are all rounded, and the base-plate is flat and perforated.

The sectionalized view shows the three layers of filling found in this type of canister. The top and the second layers consist of shell or extruded charcoal, and the bottom layer, of a greenish collored cotton-asbestos pad, or in the case of canisters marked "R", consists of paper with concentric pleats, containing small amounts of asbestos.
