CANISTER, GM, FE 37 (Tp)
Filtereinsatz 37 (Tropen)

FE 37 (Tp)

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this canister is to provide respiratory protection against chemical war-fare agents, under tropical conditions, when standard canisters would not be adequate. It is used in conjunction with a facepiece.

MARKINGS:

This class of canisters included all those stenciled "FE 37" and either "Tropen" or "Tp". The weight of the canister, less sealing plug and cap, is stenciled on the base in three figures. A brown ring, 0.6 inches wide, is usually found around the circumference of the canister just above the base. Numerous other markings, both goverment and manufac-turers', are also present.

DESCRIPTION:

These canisters are green lacquered and of the snout-type, measuring 4.2 inches maximum diameter and 3.5 inches in overall height. Canisters marked "Fe" are of tin-plate construction, while those without this marking are manufactured of aluminum  alloy. The canister body is built from two sections of metal; the upper section consists of the ex-ternally threaded neck and all of the sides of the canister down to the base, and the second section consists of the ribbed-domed base with single orifice and about 0.8 in-ches of the sides which overlap that portion of the first section that reaches to the base. The inlet orifice in the base is sealed with a removable rubber or metal plug, and the outlet at the neck is closed with a metal screw cap.

The sectionalized view shows the three layers of filling found in this type of canister. The top and second layers consist of shell or extruded charcoal, and the bottom layer consists of paper with concentric pleats and small amounts of asbestos.
