GERMAN TRACER FOR 5 CM A.P. 40 SHOT |

The tracer described is fitted to the A.P. 40 shot fired by the 5 cm Pak 38 anti-tank gun. It is similar to that employed with the 4.7 cm A.P. 40 shot. |
Body |
The tracer body is of rustproofed steel and is threaded externally for attachment to the tracer cavity of the shot. There are no markings. |
Filling |
The two part filling is made up as follows:– |
Tracing Composition. About 25.5 grains of the followings composition:– |
Magnesium |
32 per cent |
Barium Oxalate |
21 per cent |
Strontium Nitrate |
14 per cent |
Potassium Nitrate |
19 per cent |
Organic Matter |
14 per cent |
Priming Composition. About 4.6 grains of a mixture of magnesium powder, barium and po-tassium nitrates, and strontium peroxide. Accurate quantitative figures are not available. The whole is closed by a celluloid disc. |
Colour and Duration |
The colour of the trace is yellow, and its duration at rest is 3.2 seconds. It is estimated that the duration in flight would be between 2 and 2.5 seconds. |
