Chapter 2 Japanese Depth Charge - Section 5 - Unrecovered Depth ChargesSection 2 - Torpdeod Type 44
JAPANESE UNDERWATER ORDNANCE
Chapter 3 - JAPANESE TOPREDOS
Section 1 - GENERAL

Several type of Japanese torpedos have been recovered and, whenever possible, their characteristics have been determined by running them on the torpedo testing range at Newport, R. I. Performance has been estimated on the torpedos which could not be ran-ged because of poor condition. In addition to the torpedos recovered, several other ty-pes have been reported from intelligence sources.

Japanese torpedos are designated by the year in which the torpedo was first run on a testing range. The "type" designation of a torpedo is not changed because of subse-quent modifications as long as the main engine and diameter of the torpedo remain the same. As the Japanese use several different systems for designating the year, the follo-wing list is only approximate:

Explosive charges used with Japanese torpedos with the exception of Type 94, are the same as in mines and depth charges described on the preceding pages. The charac-teristics of this explosive are as follows:

Type 94 – Composed of Cyclonite 40%, and Trinitroanisole 60%. This explosive is used in a cast form and is rated as slightly more powerful than TNT.
