PFE 38

The purpose of this canister is to provide horses with some respiratory protection dur-ing warfare.

The top of the canister is marked PFE 38.

The canister body is made of tin plate, painted dark green, and is 1.5 inches from shoulder to bottom and 5.1 inches in diameter. The perforated area on the base of the canister is 3.9 inches in diameter; the depressed area containing the 9 holes at the top of the canister is 2.7 inches in diameter. The base plate is stamped so as to form a se-ries of concentric circles which are in turn cut off into raised segments by radial striat-ions. These segments are in turn perforated to act as the inlet allowing air to penetrate into the canister. The air coming out of the canister into the body proper of the face-piece escapes through the nine holes at the top. Air is prevented from reentering the ca-nister through these holes by a rubber disc which covers the holes and is kept in place by a metal stud at the center. The canister is secured to the mask by two rubber straps, the seal being made by the tight fit of the rubber facepiece to the canister.
