Arsinnachweisgerät

The purpose of this apparatus is to detect arsenic in a liquid or soild sample, contami-nated or otherwise.

There are no markings of identification value.

The apparatus comes in a wooden box and is issued chiefly to medical and decontami-nation units for training purposes. It consists of a 100 cm³ wide-mouth bottle into which is fitted a tube of glass beads with an internal inverted "U" tube through wich the arsine escapes from the reaction bottle. And to the top of this tube is fitted another which contains the arsine detector paper. The connections are made with one-hole rubber stoppers.

The apparatus works on the Gutzeit principle. The arsenic material is placed in the bottle, the organic constituents oxidized with potassium permanganate and hydrogen peroxide and then the arsine is generated with a sulfuric acid-zinc combination and de-tected by the detector paper which is impregnated with potassium mercuric iodide. Trac-es of arsenic give a pale yellow color; large amounts, a light brown color. The middle tube with the internal "U" bent is filled with glass beads and lead acetate solution to ab-sorb any hydrogen sulfide that is generated. The set includes all the chemicals necessary for conducting the test and replacement parts. It has two German names, one as indica-ted above, and the other as indicated on the opposite page above the drawing.
