Filtereinsatz 42 and Filtereinsatz 42 P

FE 42 and FE 42 P

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this canister is to remove chemical warfare agents from the atmos-phere, when used in conjunction with a facepiece.

MARKINGS:

These canisters are marked "FE 42" or "FE 42 P". In addition, numerous goverment and manufacturers' markings are present.

DESCRIPTION:

The canisters are of the snout-type, and made of green lacquered tin-plate, measur-ing 4.2 inches in diameter and 4.2 inches in height. The canister body is built from two sections of metal; the upper section consists of the externally threaded neck and all of the sides of the canister down to the base, and the second section consists of the rib-bed-domed base with single orifice and about 0.8 inches of the sides which overlap that portion of the first section which reaches to the base. The inlet orifice in the base is sealed with a removable metal plug, and the outlet at the neck is closed with a metal screw cap.

The sectionalized view shows the four layers of filling found in this type of canister. The top three layers consist of extruded charcoal, and the bottom layer consists of pa-per with concentric pleats.

In the canisters marked "FE 42 P", the charcoal is impregnated with pyridine to impro-ve their efficiency.
