The purpose of the facepiece is to protect the eyes and the respiratory organs against air contaminated with toxic agents, and at the same time to permit the use of optical instruments and telephonic equipment. It is used in conjunction with an attached canister.

Manufacturer's and goverment markings are present on various sections of the face-piece.

The facepiece consists of two portions of black leather sewn together, the seams being coated with a black sealing compound. Attached to the inside of the facepiece are a suede leather fitting band and an adjustable chin strape of similar material. The head-harness is composed of two sections, one being webbing and fabric covered metal springs having five points of attachment to the facepiece; and the other being leather and fabric covered metal springs having two points of attachment to the facepiece. A cotton carrying strap is joined to the lower portion of the facepiece.

The eyepiece are shatterproof glass, 0.9 inches in diameter, held in place by black lacquered brass eyepiece rims and frames. Anti-dim discs, 0.9 inches in diameter, are fitting against the inner surfaces of the eyepieces. In the interior, rubber eye-cups are located about the eyepieces. The eyepiece assembly is secured in position to the face-piece by means of strong twine and selaing compound.

There is a black lacqured brass adjustable connecting piece to which the corrugated rubber hose is fastened. A mica, coiled spring type outlet valve is situated in the face-piece directly under the connecting piece; no inlet valve is present.

On the lower left side an adapter is present to permit the attachment of a microphone for telephone use. The microphone is described in Section III–D, Gas Mask Accessories.
