PURPOSE:

This flamethrower is a close combat weapon for assault troops and may a discarded after firing and collected later for ?????.

MARKINGS:

There are no markings of identification value.

DESCRIPTION:

The flamethrower has an overall length of 23.6 inches and the barrel has a diameter of 2.8 inches. In operative condition it weighs 6.4 pounds and can project a single flame burst uo to 100 feet for 1 - 2 seconds duration. The weapon consists of:

1. Cylindrcial sheet metal casing with two covers welded on.

2. Flame tube (A)

3. Ignition tube (B)

4. Handle with tigger mechanism (C)

5. Two loops for carrying strap

6. Carrying strap

The flame tube is closed by a protecting cap and a cap nut with a rubber plug. The igni-tion tube is closed by a threaded retaining sleeve which holds the pressure and igniter catridge in place. The spacer ring, ring nut, bursting disc and paper disc are also in the ignition tube. The trigger mechanism consists of the trigger and trigger spring and a safety cotter pin, the latter being attached to the trigger guard by means a ring and chain.

The pull igniter SM - 10 (white protective cap - no delay) is inserted into the fuze well of the ignition tube and its loop is put through the hole in the trigger and held in place by the trigger spring. The igniter tube holds 1.5 quarts of flamethrower liquid. The pull igniter ignites the cartridge which explodes and the pressure of the power gases rup-ture the bursting disc. The gas pressure acts on the fuel which pushes out the rubber plug and is expelled through the flame tube. The fuel is ignited in front of the flame tube by a flash issuing from the cartrigde.
