PURPOSE:

This item provides the newest flame ejector meachnism for the Portable Flamethrower Fuel Pack 41.

MARKINGS:

There are no markings of identification value.

DESCRIPTION:

1. Magazine.

This is a long cylindrical tube holding 10, 0.40 inch cartridges, each 0.87 inches long, with a rear central percussion cap. These are placed head to tail in the magazine through a cutaway in the dust cover and are held forward by a piston whose rear end, in the form of a crosspiece, is located on top of the valve body above the trigger.

2. Fuel Ejection.

The valve body is an aluminum valve operated by a spring loaded trigger operated by the right hand; this trigger folds flat when not in use.

3. Ignition System.

This system is protected from the dust by a steel tube 1.7 inches in diameter. It consists of a spring loaded cartridge magazine, parallel to and above the main fuel barrel, firing the ejection meachanism at the forward end. The firing and ejection meachnism is operated by the same trigger that operates the main fuel valve.

4. Breech.

The normal position of the breach is such that the mouth of the cartridge is about 0.4 inches from the fuel jet and inclined at an angle of 27.5 degrees to it, so that the flash is directed into the fuel jet.

5. Ejection.

The cartridge is ejected in the forward direction.

6. Functioning.

The following is accomplished in the given order by moving the trigger back through 33 degrees:

a. The breech swings back through 20 degrees, allowing the extractor claw to re-cedo when ejection of the spent cartridge takes place.

b. The main fuel valve begins to open and the breech receives a new cartridge.

c. The main fuel valve is opened completely and the cartridge striker pin is drawn back.

d. The striker pin is released, allowing the breech to swing forward to 27.5 degrees inclination; percussion then takes place. On releasing the trigger to the flat position, the firing mechanism is ready for a repeat shot. The flamethrower can be fired the times, with a range of 25 yards.

7. Overall characteistics.

The projector is painted sand brown and weighs 5.5 pounds; it has an over-all length of 35.3 inches and a diameter of 1.7 inches.
