GRENADE, SMOKE, 39

PURPOSE:

This grenade has a wooden handle which enables it to be thrown; when detonated, it produces a screening smoke.

MARKINGS:

The head of the grenade has a broken gray stencilled band and the lettering: "Nb", Nb.Hgr. 39" or "Nb.Hgr. 39B".

DESCRIPTION:

The grenade closely resembles the H.E. stick grenade in external form and size. The overall length of the grenade is 14 inches; the head is a gray painted metal cylinder 2.3 inches in diameter and 3 inches long. There are 8 holes in the base of the head through which the smoke escapes. The handle has 3 horizontal corrugations at the screw cap end to assists in differentiation by touch.

The friction pull igniter is inserted in the handle and the open end of the flash cap is placed in the recess in the top of the igniter and the handle is then screwed into the head. The delay is 7 seconds and the grenade burns for two minutes. The smoke mixture is an HC type.

These smoke grenades are packed in sheet metal carrying cases containing 15 grena-des, pull igniters and starter tubes. The case measures 18.7 x 15 x 5.3 inches.

The model N4 igniter (Zündladung N4) used with this grenade is an aluminum alloy tube 0.25 inches in diameter and 1.8 inches long. The bottom end has a bright green band 0.6 inches wide and the igniters are usually packed 10 to a cardboard box.
