This shell is fired from the 70 mm, 15 calibre How. The shell is coloured deep red over the whole body and carries no stencilled marking. It has a length when plugged of 9.3 inches and weighs 10 lb. 5 oz. |
Shell |
The shell body is of forged steel without base plate, and weighs 6.9 lb. The nose adapter which is machined from bar stock weighs 2.2 lb. The cavity is of the usual Italian parallel wall design. The driving band is of copper. |
Bursting Charge |
The bursting charge of cast T.N.T., which has the low density of 1.47, is carried in a cardboard container positioned below the nose adapter by means of a felt washer. It weighs 10.6 oz. |
Exploder |
The exploder comprises a bakelized paper tube with metal closing caps and contains 14 drs. ballistite. The density of loading is approximately 0.96. |
Fuze and Gaine |
The fuze is of the Inneschi type used over a 2.3 gram ballistite gaine both of which have been described in Pamphlet No. 7. |
