ITALIAN 37 MM. 40 CAL. CARTRIDGE Q.F. FUZELESS, SEMI ARMOUR PIERCING |
The round is used in the 37 mm. 40 Calibre Q.F. A.A./A.Tk. gun. The nose to the shell is coloured red, and the remainder of the body pale blue. It is stenciled as shown in the diagram. The total lenght of the round is 13 inches, the brass case being 7.9 inches long. The weight of the complete round is 2 lb. 14 1/2 oz. |
Shell |
The shell is steel and is apparently machined from bar stock, the cavity is closed a left-hand threaded base plug and copper washer. The driving band is of copper. The shell is secured to the cartridge case by a continuous cannelure. The weight of the filled shell is 1 1/2 lb. approximately. The V.D. Hardness figure for the head varies from approximately 700 at the point to 300 at the shoulder. |
Bursting Charge |
The bursting charge consists of 13 drs. chopped flake ballistite. There is no exploder system and this charge is apparently intended to function by the heat generated upon impact. |
Cartridge Case and Propellant Charge |
These are similar in all respects to those described for the common pointed round. |
