Section I. ANTIPERSONNEL MINES

93. Schützenmine 44 (Schützenmine 44, Schü.Mi. 44)

a. Description. The antipersonnel Schützenmine 44 (fig. 112) uses the pull fuze 35 (par. 44) with a nail inserted in the trip wire (outer) hole of the striker shaft. The side of the pressure lid which contains the fuze slot is angled in toward the mine case and the nail in the pull fuze 35 bears against the outside of the pressure lid. The safety-pin cord pas-ses through a hole provided in the top of the pressure lid. The safety-pin cord is used to remove the safety pin after the mine has been laid. There are two wooden spacer blocks on either side of the pull fuze 35 which serve to hold the fuze and a 0.44-pound main charge in place. When the mine is armed it is 7 inches long, 4 3/4 inches wide, and 5 in-ches high.

b. Employment. This mine is laid along paths, trails, road shoulders, approaches to likely fords across rivers and streams, and in antitank mine fields. It may be laid unburied in grass or wooded areas and covered with leaves or other vegetation.

c. Functioning. Pressure of 15 pounds on the pressure lid forces the sloped front of the pressure lid against the nail, pushing the striker shaft outward until the spring-loaded striker is released against the percussion cap, firing the mine.

d. Installing and Arming.

(1)

Place the 0.44-pound main charge in the mine and screw a pull fuze 35, with deto-nator, into the main charge through the hole in the end of the mine.

(2)

Insert a nail in the trip wire (outer) hole in the striker shaft and lead the safety-pin up through the hole in the pressure lid.

(3)

Lower the pressure lid so the lower pat of the front of the pressure lid rests against the nail, which is in a horizontal position.

(4)

Remove the nut on the end of the safety pin.

(5)

With the safety-pin cord, pull the safety pin through the hole in the pressure lid.

e. Neutralizing.

(1)

Carefully lift the pressure lid without applying a downward pressure and remove the nail.

(2)

Insert the nail in the safety-pin hole of the fuze.

(3)

Unscrew the fuze.

(4)

Remove the detonator from the fuze.
