CHAPTER 5 - FUZES
Section IV. PRESSURE-PULL FUZES

35. General

The five fuzes in this group are actuated by pressure, exerted in the tops of the fuzes or against a tilt rod, or by pull on a trip wire attached to a pull pin or a tilt rod.

36. Pressure Pull Fuze 29 (Zug- und Druckzünder 29; Z.D.Z 29)

a. Description. The pressure-pull fuze 29 (fig. 39) is an instantaneous, mechanical type with a spring-loaded striker and pull-pin or shear-pin release. The brass fuze case has a pressure-setting device on the top and a safety bar and a pull pin extending from the side of the case. The pull pin is marked with the letters ZUG (pull) beneath it, and the safety bar is marked with the letter SICH (safe) beneath it. When the safety bar is in place, it is between the striker and the percussion cap. The pressure-setting device consists of a slotted disk with the letter DRUCK (push) on it and an indicator mark on the rim. Three notations are on the head of the fuze: ZUG (pull), 125 KG (276 pounds of pressure for antitank use), and 45 KG (99 pounds of pressure for antipersonnel use). The striker is held in a cocked position by the pull pin, when set to operate by pull (ZUG); by one shear pin, when set for antipersonnel use (45 KG); or by two shear pins when set for antitank use (125 KG). The fuze is about 2 1/2 inches high, and is 1 7/8 inches in diame-ter.

b. Employment. The fuze was designed primarily for use in the Tellermine 29 (par. 61).

c. Functioning.

(1)

Pressure.

(a)

Antipersonnel.

1.

The indicator mark on the slotted disk (marked DRUCK) is opposite the 45 KG mark and the striker is held in a cocked position by one shear pin. The other shear pin and the pull pin are positioned in the vertical grooves in the striker, permitting the striker to move without engaging them.

2.

A pressure of 99 pounds, or more, on the fuze shears the shear pin.

3.

The striker, driven by the striker spring, fires the percussion cap and the detonator.

(b)

Antitank.

1.

The indicator mark on the slotted disk is opposite the 125 KG mark and the striker is now held in a cocked position by both shear pins. The pull pin is positioned in a vertical groove in the striker, permitting vertical movement of the striker without engaging the pull pin.

2.

A pressure of 276 pounds, or more, shears the shear pin.

3.

The striker, driven by the striker spring, fires the percussion cap and the detonator.

(2)

Pull.

(a)

The indicator mark on the slotted disk is opposite ZUG and the striker is held in a cocked position only by the pull pin. The two shear pins are positioned in the vertical grooves in the striker, permitting vertical movement of the striker with-out shearing the two shear pins.

(b)

A pull of 0 pounds pulls out the pull pin.

(c)

The striker, driven by the striker spring, fires the percussion cap and the deto-nator.

d. Installing and Arming.

(1)

Remove the shipping cap and insert a detonator in the base of the fuze.

Figure 39. Pressure-pull fuze 29.

(2)

Turn the slotted disk to the desired setting (c above).

(3)

Screw the fuze into the mine.

(4)

Attach a wire or cord to the ring on the safety bar and remove the bar from a safe distance.

Note. If the indicator mark is set at ZUG and the pull pin is withdrawn by accident before the safety bar is removed, the striker engages in a slot in the safety bar and prevents removal of the bar.

e. Neutralizing.

(1)

If the original safety bar is available, insert it in the slot marked SICH. Do not try to insert an imporvised safety bar such as a nail or penknife into the slot marked SICH because an edge may come into contact with the percussion cap and cause it to explode. If the safety bar is not available, the fuze may still be neutralized by fol-lowing steps (2) through (6).

(2)

Cut any slack trip wires attached to the pull pin.

(3)

Grasp the fuze around its base without touching the top.

(4)

Gently unscrew the fuze from the mine.

(5)

Remove the detonator from the fuze.

(6)

Unscrew the percussion-cap-holder set screw and unscrew the percussion-cap-holder from the base of the fuze.
