This facepiece is used mainly to protect the eyes and the respiratory organs of civili-an defense workers against air contaminated with toxic agents. It is used in conjunction with an attached "S" canister.

The markings found on the inner side include the manufacture's name, "Kenn-Num-mer", and the phrase:

"Vertrieb gem. § 8
Luftschutzgesetz genehmigt"

Other markings, including the size number, are also present. Late model face-pieces lack-ing the "Kenn Nummer" and the above phrase are military issus.

The early models of the facepiece are similar in construction to the late model except in the design of the connecting piece. The drawing illustrates an early model facepiece, with an additional sketch showing the inside view of the connecting piece. In time, vari-ous attachments were added to the connecting piece, which included: a perforated grill fastened over the out-side slotted grill (A), a rubber molded fitting placed on the metal edges of the inlet valve chamber (B), and a wire gauze screen on the outlet valve cham-ber (C). The late model of the facepiece is identical in construction to the one described under FACEPIECE, GM 30, Item III–A–4.
