The purpose of this facepiece is to project the eyes and respiratory organs of civilian personnel against air contaminated with toxic agents. It is used in conjunction with an attached canister.

Manufacturers markings are present.

The facepiece proper is made of oiled leather, with a cloth fitting band sewn on and them gummed. The eyepieces are semi-flexible and made of cellulose acetate. The inlet assembly is metal and threaded to fit the standard army drum-type canister; it contains no inlet valve. The head-harness is made of cotton tape and covered coiled steel springs and is non-adjustable. There are six points of attachment to the facepiece.

On the inlet assembly is a metal loop through which is passed a strong cord which passed through a cloth loop at the top of the facepiece and then to a button on top of the head-harness, where it is fastened.

There are many variations of this type of facepiece, varying in the material of the facepiece and the type of head-harness. Also, some types do not have the outlet valve on the left side.
