Part I Section F, Mortar Smoke Ammunition
GERMAN CHEMICAL WARFARE MATERIAL
Part I - GROUND WEAPONS AND AMMUNITION
Section E - ARTILLERY SMOKE AMMUNITION

INTRODUCTION

The system of nomenclature of the 7.5 and 10.5 cm artillery smoke shell involven the type of weapon using the munition, since the 7.5 cm shell are usually fixed rounds and the 10.5 cm shell, semi-fixed or unfixed. The abbraviated designation of the gun is usual-ly found stamped on the base of the cartridge case.

The smoke filling is oleum impregnated in pumice with few exceptions. In the cases of shell numbers 6 and 7 in the 7.5 cm section, and 12, 13, 14 and 15 in the 10.5 cm sec-tion, the color of the smoke is as indicated by the nomenclature. The color of the smoke is due to the dye added to the smoke filling. The Dopp.Z. S/60 fuzes used in these colo-red smoke shell function either for air burst or impact; on detonation, the colored smoke cloud can be used to signal or mark targets. The colored cloud is readily observed against a white background such as now.

The Roman numeral mentioned on the specimen data sheets is the "Gewichtsklasse" number of the shell and may vary from the number stated. The overall color of the shell varies from olive-green to gray-green; the red ring found on some shell just above the driving band indicates that the shell is to be used only in the gun of the corresponding caliber and not the howitzer.

The German abbraviations of the weapon designation and the corresponding German and English names are in the following table:
