(8 cm Wgr. 39)
(Fig. 23)

The H.E. bomb, Model 39, for the 8 cm mortar (Gr.W. 34 8 cm), like the Model 38 bomb also described in this pamphlet, contains an ejection charge inside the hightly attached head which, after imapct, throwns the body into the air where the bursting charge is de-tonated.

The bomb is painted deep olive green or dull red and is stencilled in black. The deep olive green bombs encountered to date have been fitted with steel fuzes (Wgr.Z. 38 St.) and have been stencilled below the parallel portion of the body with the H.E. numeral "14". This indicates a bursting charge of T.N.T. The dull red bombs have been fitted with the normal alloy fuze (Wgr.Z. 38) and have the H.E. numeral "13" stencilled in the same po-sition which indicates a bursting charge of Amatol 40/60. The bomb can distinguished from the 34 and 38 models by the four small equidistant screws securing the head to the body. These are found just above the grooved parallel portion of the bomb and are nor-mally covered by a wax-like sealing composition.

By reference to the drawings it will be seen that the 39 Model differs from the 38, al-ready described, in that instead of the body being closed at the top by a closing plate secured by pins, a diaphragm is formed integral with the body. Also, the celluloid capsule containing the ejection charge is of a different shape and is without the holes sealed with ignition composition in its base.

Cartridges

A primary cartridge and four augmenting cartridges of the types used with the earlier pattern bombs are used. The size of the propellant rings in the augmenting cartridges differs in that the external and internal diameters are 60 mm and 30 mm, respectively instead of 70/35.
