(Fig. 11)

This small direct action detonating nose fuze has been found in H.E. shell for the 2.8 cm Pz.B. 41 and 4.2 cm Pak. 41 tapered bore anti-tank guns.

The aluminium ogival body and flat topped head of the fuze protrudes approximately 0.6 inch from the shell. The designation "A.Z. 5072" is stamped in the body above the flange.

The weight of the fuze is 5.4 drams.

The body of the fuze is recessed at the top to receive the striker assembly and screw-threaded internally for the insertion of the head. At the base it is recessed and screw-threaded for the insertion of the magazine. The diaphragm between the two recesses has a pole at the centre for the striker.

The aluminium head of the fuze is recessed from the underside to fit over the striker assembly and has a thin diaphragm at the top.

The striker is supported by two centrifugal half collars which are retained in position un-der a collar on the striker by an expanding spring ring and a steel retaining ring. A circular projection on the base of the steel ring engages in corresponding semi-circular grooves in the top of the half collars.

The magazine contains P.E.T.N. in powder form with a detonator of lead azide, calcium silicide and P.E.T.N. at the top.

Action

During deceleration in flight the retaining ring moves forward and disengages from the groove in the half collars. The coil of the expanding spring ring is enlarged and the half collars thrown clear of the striker by centrifugal force. The striker is then held off the detonator by "creep" action. On impact the head of the fuze is crushed and the striker driven on to piece the detonator.
