This shell is used in the 105 mm. 28 calibre gun-howitzer. |
Shell |
The shell body is of forged steel the cavity being of the parallel wall type. Both cavity and exterior are machined over all. The cavity is threaded internally at the top to receive the nose adapter. The latter is a machined forging internally threaded at the nose to re-ceive the fuze hole adapter, and externally at the base for attachment to the shell body. The fuze hole adapter is machined from bar stock and its threaded internally to receive the fuze and gaine and externally for attachment to the nose adapter. |
The driving band is pure copper and a soldered steel base plate is fitted. |
The overall length of the fuzed anbd filled shell is 16 inches approximately and the weight 35 lb. The weight of the empty shell is 28.4 lb. |
Bursting Charge |
The bursting charge consists of 3 lb. 9 1/2 ozs. cast T.N.T. with central cast cavity for the exploder system. The surface of the T.N.T. is selead with a plastic composition and the latter is covered with a felt washer. |
Exploder |
The 43 gram ballistite exploder, screwed to the 5 gram ballistite gaine is similar to that described for the 149 mm./13 cal. high capacity H.E. shell in Pamphlet No. 9, page 31. |
Fuze |
The Inneschi graze fuze used in this shell has been fully described in Pamphlet No. 7. |
